Today I’m driving to Vegas to go to KBIS (Kitchen and Bath Industry Show), by myself and I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was a bit nervous. I’ve been to Vegas a dozen of times, but I’ve never gone by myself. All week, I’ve been struggling with the questions and thoughts “should I go?”, “am I really going to learn that much?”, “I probably won’t have any fun”, “I’m going to be missing out on work at home”, yet something inside of me is beckoning me to go. Let me tell you, if I were planning this trip with either Nick or some friends, these thoughts wouldn’t even cross my mind! So I think this little road trip is going to be good for me!

Kitchens, kitchens, kitchens! That’s what I’ve had on my brain lately! This week I’m heading to Vegas to join thousands of other kitchen and bath designers at KBIS (Kitchen and Bath Industry Show) at the Las Vegas Convention Center. KBIS is held once a year, alternating between Chicago and Las Vegas. Luckily, it’s in Vegas this year (driving distance, yay!), so I’m going to spend a couple days checking out the latest and greatest in kitchen and bath trends.

Wednesday Weekend Warm Up: Jelly Bean Martini

One thing that clearly stands out in my memory as a child, is that Easter was filled with jelly beans! This year, this classic little candy shaped as a bean takes a more mature direction in the form of a Easter cocktail martini. This is what the Easter Bunny will be leaving at our house this year!

A Love Affair: Easter Decorating and Decor

Easter has always been one of my favorite holidays since it’s usually right around my birthday and it states that Spring is officially here with Summer not too far behind. Throughout my life, I’ve always received birthday gifts wrapped in pastels, egg shapes and bunnies. And I LOVE it! Easter is so sweet and soft with it’s tints of pink, yellow, green and blue all making their appearances in table décor, centerpieces, window hangings, cakes, candies and eggs! Here’s to Easter!

Makeover Monday: Mismatched Bedroom Side Tables

…don’t get too “matchy matchy”.

We’ve all been there – that big box furniture store where the deals are “amazing” and you can’t pass up getting 10 pieces of bedroom furniture for $799! Wow. You think that seems like a great deal, but once you get them all in your bedroom you’re surrounded by these furniture pieces that all look the same. Sure they match, but where’s the personality in that?

5254914_UcBcQCpp_c 5254899_gFb6bJds_c

Whenever I’m designing a room, I make sure there is an element of surprise. Something a little different, something a little special. This can easily be achieved starting with your bedside tables.

2162484_Fxiq7pMa_c 1419797_SCc8MmMO_c

If you have matching bedside tables now, swap one out for an old refinished cabinet (I just met with a client last week who did this – love it!), or glass side table with metal accents, or a mirrored chest of drawers, or maybe even a small writing desk!

mismatched-bedside-tables-1-s-w-design-dot-blogspot-dot-com

This fun and easy interior design tip can easily be achieved by anyone! You may already have a small piece of furniture in your home or an old set of luggage that could easily be converted into a bedside table. If not, head to your local thrift store. They are filled with used furniture with tons of personality – throw a new coat of paint on it in one of your favorite shades and you’ve got yourself a custom side table!

Smile…it’s a (walk your dog) kind of weekend!

13168777_p93Zkwqk_c

The weather in Southern California has been gorgeous! This is no weekend to sit around inside, so we’re (my dogs and I) are hittin’ the streets! We’re experiencing a lack of good behavior from the pooches this week since we were both gone last weekend (they hate that!) and now, by the end of the week, things are getting back to normal. A good walk makes everything better! Wishing you all a fabulous weekend whatever your plans may be!

Wednesday Weekend Warm Up: Chocolate Martini

I can’t help it…I’ve had major chocolate cravings all week! Tasting like a rich dessert, this martini is the perfect after-dinner drink.

A Love Affair: Perfect Parrots

I spent the weekend in San Diego. A favorite spot of mine has always been Seaport Village. This weekend, a man was sharing with the rest of the world, a collection of parrots which he’s rescued. I was completely awestruck and inspired by the colors on these birds.

Furniture Friday: dhurrie-upholstered settee by Wisteria

Ever since I met with my new decorating client yesterday, I’ve got sofas on the brain! We are custom designing a piece for her and I’m so excited to see how it turns out! When shopping and sourcing furniture, where do you turn to when your client doesn’t want a custom piece and would rather shop retail? I’m looking for inspiration! This is not what my client has in mind, but I love it. I thought it was such a unique piece and who doesn’t love a good black and white print? This girl does.

Wisteria settee

Name: Wooden Upholstered Sofa with Bridal Rug

Store: Wisteria Price: $1,599 Dimensions: 59.5"w x 31"d x 28.5"h

What makes this perfect is the amazing pattern that isn’t perfect. No two are alike. The diamond pattern on this dhurrie-upholsteredsettee is a symbol of unity. And you’ll be “at one” with this settee and its rich, dark hardwood legs and 19th century design. Since this sofa is handmade, it will have slight variances from piece to piece (with imperfections in the fabric).

  • Diamond pattern symbolizing unity
  • Each one is unique
  • Cotton and wood construction

Chevron is still running as a strong contender in my love of patterns. Whether in your home or what you’re wearing, chevron is a must.
